Seeing a sport motorcycle sail past you on the freeway, it’s easy to imagine yourself giving it a shot. Motorcycles in general are adrenaline machines, but a sport bike reaches a new level. If you’ve never ridden one before, you might not know how much skill goes into becoming a great rider. This brief guide will hopefully give you a few tips on how to improve your sportbike riding so that you can be safe and have fun on your next ride. When you’re ready to take one for a test ride, stop by Motorcycle Maxx. We’re located in Lewis Center, Ohio, near Columbus & Cincinnati, and carry the latest sport motorcycles available on the market!

Acceleration

The first thing to know about riding a sport bike is that it’s probably got more power than you think. Remember: you’ll always have more power if you want it. But hitting that sweet spot of acceleration where you ease forward at a controlled pace requires a gentle touch. You’ll want to only barely rev the engine with the throttle while smoothly releasing the clutch, and if you feel things picking up too quickly, simply re-engage the clutch or drop the throttle.

Steering

The shape and design of a sport motorcycle are designed to harmonize with a rider’s body so that the bike is essentially an extension of the rider’s own body. For this reason, steering a sport bike requires the rider to lean and shift their gravity more than merely turn the handlebars. This type of riding is more athletic and active than other types of motorcycle riding and for this reason, it’s best to start slow and master at lower speeds before working your way up to high-speed turns.

Braking

Sport motorcycles tend to feature some pretty heavy-duty braking systems. They need these to wrangle all the power provided by their powerful engines. If you try to slam on the brakes from high speeds, though, you might be in for a rude awakening. Try to use both the front and rear brakes when possible to slow yourself down. It’s almost never a good idea to use just the front brakes. If you do, you might get thrown over the handlebars.

Riding a sport motorcycle can be hazardous if you don’t take your time to learn how your bike works and be careful with it. But once you get used to riding your model, there’s no experience quite like riding it. Give us a call at Motorcycle Maxx when you’re ready to take a sport bike for a test ride.
